The Battle of Penny Burn Mill, Part Two
Clarence Harrison - My grass mats finally arrived and I was able to get some major work in on the table for Historicon 2016 this weekend. I've written lots of articles on building terrain boards and you can find the details of using a felt mat as the first layer of texture here. I want to emphasize that I use a FELT backed mat for this process. The ones I've always used come from Monday Knight...
Historicon 2016
Clarence Harrison - Here's one of the units for the defenders of Derry at the Battle of Penny Burn Mill, Lieutenant Colonel John Cairns Regiment of Foot...
The uniform and flag of the unit are unknown. Many of the units on both sides at Derry were probably dressed in civilian clothes, so I've used a unit with a bit of a motley appearance. The flags are plain, the sort militia might carry, however...

Sir Maurice Eustace's Regiment of Foot
Clarence Harrison - Finally had the chance to finish this battalion for the Battle of Penny Burn Mill...
This is a really useful unit for any Ireland collection because they fought in most of the major battles, including Aughrim. Plus the flags are really cool - something beyond the normal crosses! They will be equipped with a pike stand as well, but I'm going to paint those for all four foot...

The Battle of Penny Burn Mill, Part One
Clarence Harrison - Happy New Year! Starting off 2016 with progress to report for this summer's trip to Historicon. Here is the plan for our table...
The board will be 4x8', constructed in two halves. The details will evolve as I get stuck in, but my initial step is to rough in the main forms. I've written lots of tutorialson the subject of building terrain, so I'm not going to detail every step,...

Lieutenant General Richard Hamilton
Clarence Harrison - I took a break from painting rank and file to complete an officer that's been half finished on my desk for weeks.
This will be Lieutenant General Richard Hamilton for my Jacobite Boyne army, but will also serve as a brigade commander (not sure which one yet) for our Historicon project, the Battle of Penny Burn Mill.

Sir Maurice Eustace's Regiment of Foot WIP
Clarence Harrison - I started a regiment for Beneath the Lily Banners for our Historicon 2016 game: Sir Maurice Eustace's regiment of foot from the army of King James II.
For the Battle of Penny Burn Mill, the regiment will be 18 models plus a pike stand.
Of course, the unit is NOT in my plan for the Battle of the Boyne, but I always planned to collect beyond the handful of battalions I needed for...

Plans for Historicon 2016
Clarence Harrison - As mentioned a few weeks ago, Barry and I are going to attend Historicon 2016 and put on a small Beneath the Lily Banners game, probably at least once a day during the event. The game will be based on the battle around Penny Burn Mill outside the wall of Derry, April 21st, 1689.
This sketch is just to get started. The board will be 4x8' and I am going to attempt to build it in...

Historicon 2016
Clarence Harrison - Well, it is all but set in stone that Barry and I will be attending Historicon 2016. Vacation time has been scheduled, travel options are being considered, and plans are underway for a participation game of Beneath the Lily Banners that we will run at least once a day (and maybe twice depending on what else we get up to).
