The League of Augsburg
Various WiP shots
two bases from a three base Cossack infantry unit |
I have too many projects going at the same time. Purely a function of bringing out new figures for Warfare Miniatures. Painting samples for the website means that lots of things get started but very often wait for a long time to get finished.
Command and three models to be added to this Russian unit in kartuz |
Every base on this post is part of a unit...
As it should be. Swedish GNW Cavalry
Charge! The Swedish Liv Dragoon Regiment thunders down upon its quaking enemies |
It's a legitimate question. Why has it taken you so long to produce a unit of your own cavalry, based in your own 'chevron' style?
Time and conflicting priorities is the answer. I don't have enough of the former and an abundance of the latter.
Squadron 1 full charge in chevron |
I did paint about eighteen riders but only...
Deep in it.... some of the collateral
Russian Force #1 details below in the text |
Where have I been then? Up to my armpits in getting the GNW/Eastern Wars supplement for Beneath the Lily Banners 3rd edition moved forward.
Russian field gun in a log redoubt |
The book is being laid out right now and the early views are very encouraging. Despite a pretty extensive archive of shots, I knew I didn't have enough of the right kind. I have thus...
One to One wargaming - table top reality
A real life soldier! Musketeer Sean of a Jacobite regiment in Ireland circa 1689. Copyright B Hilton. |
Figure gaming usually falls into some broad categories in terms of scale. Firstly there is the model scale and secondly, the model to man ratio.
Typically 40mm, 28/25mm, 20mm, 15mm, 10mm, 6mm are the most common categories for the former. Of course there are several intermediate scales and some...
One to one wargaming: expanding the idea
Three 48 man companies of musketeers from the garrison of Derry. A company of Mountjoy's Regt at the centre. |
I was very pleased that the first post on this subject was popular and that visitors were stimulated to consider the implications of frontages, deployment, fire methodologies and movement around the battlefield and its table top imitation.

The work of Dino Todaro
Swedish Regiment Vasterbotten - the basing really sets off the unit superbly |
Wargaming takes some unusual turns. When we visited Tuscany on holiday I arranged to meet an Italian gamer, collector and painter with whom I had corresponded for a couple of years. When we met in his beautiful home town of Lucca we really hit it off.

Since then we have met...
On the mat - some shots of the toys
I quickly threw together some old bits and pieces from the various collections to test out the mat. I am very pleased with the way it has come out. I think it is fine here in our little Lace Wars corner to have a little heavy metal on show (I do still have a fair bit of it!).
So, the shots...

Building up the Panzer Division: Imperial Cuirassiers
Why would you not want to build the army that consistently contributed to the defence of Christian Europe and to facing down Christian Europe's most powerful Catholic monarch?
The Austrians/Habsburgs/Holy Roman Empire/Imperialist Army is the Janus of continental Europe - looking both South and North(west) at once.
For some reasons I always think the Austrians don't get a fair kick at the ball....
WLOA61 & WLOA63 French Dragoons
WLOA61 & WLOA63 as a squadron |
I have taken too long to paint these lovely French mounted dragoons. These models were a real pleasure to paint and the squadron looks pretty impressive. They are the start of the League of Augsburg game which will feature at Crisis 2017.
WLOA61 |
We are finally travelling to Flanders both physically and in gaming terms.
WLOA63 |
These codes are selling well and will be...
Polish Panzers - Pancerni
Pancerni Green Banner |
As part of the Eastern Expansion initiated by Toggy I received a large box containing 47 painted Polish cavalry from the brush of talented Rob Goodyer.
Pancerni Red Banner |
Perry Brothers' sculpting has come a long way form the 1990s but these models still have a charm all of their own and hold the same place in my heart as Mark Copplestone's big handed Grand Alliance sculpts...
Toggy's Cossacks - a splash of colour
Nothing quite like polish on the Polish! - Toggy's winter work. |
A splash of colour in a dull world, no. I am not talking about Toggy Bob I am talking about his lovely unit of Cossacks!.. although, Toggy has his moments!
In an effort to persuade him to spend less time with dead fish and rotting fruit I hope to encourage his undoubted but rarely deployed talents away from collecting truck number...
Things to do with carts.. creativity with mundane items
Cart convoy - moving the army the hard way |
I like all that nonsense you can create for the table which is not about men with weapons killing each other. I have made it a bit of an LoA trademark over the years with battery positions, wagons, civilian vignettes and the like.
Muddy waters under the cart - made using yacht varnish |
The arrival of the extensive Swedish artillerymen many of whom are open...
