A late 'battle shot' with the Swedes through the redoubt line |
Jon is very experienced at running large games as he owned and managed a wargaming centre on Crete for several years.

The Swedes columns lined up to storm the redoubt line before the battle commenced |
The plan for the one day show in Antwerp was to steer the Battle of Poltava 1709 through its various distinct phases in order to get to the...
League of Augsburg game Crisis 2017
We had decided well in advance that our Crisis game for 2017 would be modest in size but pretty. There was no need to try and take a massive game by car to Antwerp as we already knew that Jon Sutherland would be running his monster Poltava game adjacent to our table. Running another GNW effort would simply have been overkill so we chose Flanders sometime between 1692 and 1695 for our effort.

Poltava Part 1 - taster of an epic
This game was a year in the making and is the result of the hard work of Jon and Diane Sutherland who created it as a commission for a private collector.
I have been intimately involved with the development as all of the figures used are Warfare Miniatures and there are roughly 2,500 plus about 400 horses here! I counted 'em, Jon painted 'em and Diane built the terrain!
The commission was...
Some artillery vignettes
I have been working on some artillery vignettes recently and have only just gotten round to photographing them for the blog.
Although we do not have specifically French gunners yet I shaved off the single shoulder strap from our RA1 AND RA3 GNW Russian gunners to create a heavy mortar crew for the French army in Flanders.
The base is dressed with various pieces from the siege equipment set including...
At last - painted Russian mounted Dragoons
These are masters. I had none of the new horses to hand but this shows how well they sit on the existing horse types.
I have painted six troopers which come in two different packs of three. They are painted as the Moskovski Dragoons who wore a white uniform faced white.
I also managed to get one of the Horse Grenadier codes painted too. The also look pretty smart.
They were great fun to paint and...

French Dragoons both mounted and dismounted supported by a mortar |
I had to make a choice - Blog or paint. I decided in the interest of having things to blog about, I should paint!
Crisis is approaching fast and soon Captain Haddock, Cookie Gwen and myself, the Old Codger, will be sailing the High Seas to Ijmuiden for our road trip to the centre of Belgian wargaming - Antwerpen.

Guest post: GNW Swedes by Don Crane
The Brigade in all its glory |
The Blog has featured the work of several painters over the years and I always enjoy seeing how painters and gamers create and interpret figures and unit construction.
I recently had the privilege of seeing some truly wonderful pieces of work from Don Crane who has been building a GNW Swedish army.

Jacobite Foot Guards and Grand Prior's Regiments - stalwarts of King James's Irish Army |
Our Battle for Britain campaign has been running for a year now and in campaign terms we have come two years from the beginning of 1692 till the end of 1693. We've fought four major battles and twelve minor ones together with countless 'on paper' skirmishes and expeditions.

Action during the battle to capture Tortuga from Governor du Casse |
I am just back from our latest Weekender epic continuing the campaign to control Britain and its associated colonial territories in 1693. I wanted to post up a glance at what we were doing before flying out to all points sandy tomorrow so, here it is!

Ultimately a productive week..
Another batch of Haitians completed |
It didn't start well with three of my holiday days being taken up with work and I thought my painting plan would go to wrack and ruin. Nevertheless, focus is the watchword and the tally for the week was
45 figures and 13 war dogs which I am pretty happy with. All completed on the terrace whilst the family were out supporting the local economy.

One afternoon in Murcia....
Two sessions work here |
I am way behind. I am so desperate to catch up that I decided to step up to the challenges of modern international travel. I carried a couple of dozen small bottles of liquid which may look to the untrained eye like something really dangerous, in a shoe box together with glue, knives and files through four airports in the space of four days to see what happened.
