The League of Augsburg
Back from the Wars.. Promenades Travel Tour of Irish Battlefields 1690-1691
Field guns at Oldbridge |
We packed a helluva lot into four and a half days visiting Oldbridge, Donore, Duleek, Athlone, Aughrim, Portumna, Nena and Limerick. We spent long enjoyable days walking the fields, forts, castles and sites of the campaigns of 1690 and 1691 in Leinster, Connaught and Munster.

Red Bog - 12th July 1691
I've been threatening to do an Aughrim video for the YouTube Channel for a while and finally got round to completing it. The Red Bog scenario is a regimental sized BLB game with 1:10 model to man ratio and is played in the 4PlayX format - 4 x 4 table, 8 turns .
It turned out rather well and got me fired up to continue with the Irish output for BLB, 4Play and background reading and reference...

River crossing scenarios - Barry's Half-men
Some new and unique pieces which I will be selling off. |
I tinker with stuff. It's an illness and I have had for years. I can't just leave things alone. I have to be chopping up figures, converting them and generally mucking about. Having been fixated with river crossings in Ireland (it all started with the Boyne you see) for quite some time, I have accrued a lot of what was once described by a...
End of a dream or, the fate of all traitors? Argyll Rebellion 1685.

Gareth Lane's Gard te Voet
More lovely work from Gareth's growing collection. It will be a real joy to see this collection on a table at a show somewhere when we finally settle down to normal once more.
Gareth's lovely warm painting style is set off by great basing and of course, Clarence's wonderful flags.
What better unit to show case the work than the Gard te Voet.
Mad for War 4Play releases
Assurance versus Constant Reformation 1649 |
I am very pleased to announce the release of the first 4Play scenario packs specifically designed for Mad for War. There are 16 packs which will be released over the next few weeks but the first batch of four is a nice cross section of some of the different conflicts of the late 17th century which will be covered by the series.

It's St Patrick's Day so...
We can't let today pass without featuring some Irish action from the Nine Years War on the blog. So I thought the best way to pay tribute to the theatre and the fighting men which has given me the most stimulation to understand the period in the last thirty years was to simply create a photo montage of action and inspiration in Ireland from the League of Augsburg..
Happy St Patrick's day to...
The bonnets o' Bonnie Dundee!
The Bonnets o' Bonnie Dundee! |
The Battle of Killiecrankie, July 27th 1689 is of enduring interest to me. It has all of the romanticism of a Hollywood mini series. A hero, who was long seen as a traitor and villain by his co-religionists and had both the sobriquet of Bluddy Clavers and Bonnie Dundee. A fractious army held together by the strength of his personality and that of other giant human...
